Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, usually accompanied by a short biography of the individual's life and information about the upcoming funeral or memorial services. It is often published in newspapers and online.

Why is an obituary important?

An obituary serves several purposes; it informs the community of a person's passing, honors the life of the deceased, and provides details on the funeral or memorial service. It also serves as a historical record for future generations.

Who typically writes an obituary?

Obituaries are commonly written by family members of the deceased or, in some cases, by the funeral home handling the services. However, some individuals choose to write their own obituaries in advance.

What key details should be included in an obituary?

An obituary should generally include the full name of the deceased, their age, the date and location of death, a brief overview of their life achievements, information about their family, details about the funeral or memorial service and any preferred charities for memorial contributions.

Is there a difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Yes, a death notice is a more straightforward announcement of a person's death and funeral service details, typically quite brief and sometimes paid for by the family, whereas an obituary offers a more detailed and personalized account of the deceased's life and legacy.

How can I write an obituary that appropriately honors my loved one?

To honor your loved one in an obituary, include anecdotes, personal tributes, and acknowledgments of their achievements and community impact. Reflecting the personality and values of the deceased can help to create a meaningful tribute.

Where should an obituary be published?

Obituaries are commonly published in local newspapers, on the websites of funeral homes, and on online memorial platforms. Some may also be shared on social media to reach a broader audience.

Can an obituary be edited after it has been published?

Once published in print, an obituary cannot be edited. However, online obituaries often offer the possibility of making changes. It’s essential to proofread and verify all details before submission.

How should I handle erroneous information published in an obituary?

If an error is found in an obituary, contact the publication or website immediately to request a correction. For print publications, this may involve issuing a corrected notice as soon as possible.

Is there a standard length for an obituary?

There is no standard length, but traditional newspaper obituaries are typically brief due to space constraints and costs. Online obituaries can be longer and more detailed.

How much does it generally cost to publish an obituary?

Costs can vary widely depending on the publication, length of the obituary, and inclusion of photographs. Newspaper obituaries can cost from a small fee for a simple death notice to several hundred dollars for a more detailed obituary.

What tone is appropriate for an obituary?

The tone of an obituary should be respectful and reflective of the deceased's life. It can range from formal and straightforward to more personal and intimate, depending on the family's wishes and the deceased's personality.

Are there any common mistakes to avoid when writing an obituary?

Common mistakes include misspelling names, inaccuracy in important dates or achievements, omitting family members, and either sharing too much personal information or not enough to properly honor the deceased.

Should an obituary be factual or can it be creative?

While an obituary should be factually accurate, it can also be creative in the way it conveys the life and essence of the person. Some obituaries include quotes, poems, or anecdotes that reflect the individuality of the deceased.

What should I do if I'm struggling with writing an obituary?

If you find writing an obituary challenging, consider enlisting the help of other family members, friends, or even professional writers who specialize in crafting obituaries. Funeral homes often offer assistance with this as well.

Is it acceptable to include details about the cause of death?

Yes, if the family is comfortable, the cause of death can be included in the obituary. However, it is not necessary and details can be kept private if preferred.

How do I handle mentioning predeceased and surviving family members?

In the obituary, it is common to list predeceased family members to acknowledge their importance in the deceased's life, as well as surviving relatives to recognize close bonds and provide clarity on family relationships.

Can an obituary include requests for charitable donations instead of flowers?

Yes, it's quite common for obituaries to note the family's preference for memorial contributions to a specific charity in lieu of flowers. This is often in alignment with the deceased's charitable passions or causes.

Is it appropriate to use a photograph with an obituary?

Incorporating a photograph with an obituary can convey the persona of the deceased and provide a visual remembrance for readers. The choice of photo should reflect how the family wishes the deceased to be remembered.

How do I ensure the obituary reaches everyone who should see it?

To make sure the obituary reaches all who should see it, consider publishing it in local newspapers, online, and on social media. Sharing the information with community organizations, clubs, or groups the deceased was affiliated with may also be beneficial.

What are some ways to make an obituary stand out?

To make an obituary stand out, include unique details about the deceased's life, passions, and impact on others. Storytelling, using a favorite quote, or highlighting special achievements can all contribute to a memorable obituary.
