so is this game going to be a play to win or is player skill needed to win, i like how the game looks and i like that i can still be getting better while i work because of the ai scripting but i don't want some guys to own me because i like to earn in game stuff instead of pay thousands of dollars for the basic supplies.

Player Skill leads to victory. It's no Pay 2 Win.

Money does but you a huge headstart of 3 months and also some items, mounts, buildings and IP, but you can kill them and take the stuff so you can hopefully make up for it with gameplay.

Technically yes, but only the Kickstarter as far as we know.

EDIT: Lol people disliking. Sorry I'm just a realist.

Stop taking P2W so literally. It doesn't mean you actually win. Winning is subjective and there aren't any multiplayer games where you can pay money and literally win the whole game. It just means you pay money and get some sort of non-cosmetic gameplay advantage, which in the case of the CoE kickstarter is true. P2W isn't always a bad thing and it's honestly the best system they could have set up for this Kickstarter imo.

There isn't really anything that you could consider "winning" in this game from one standpoint. It all depends on your preference. Becoming a king isn't the main goal of this game. Becoming a legendary hero isn't the goal of this game either. The goal of this game is determined by the player. If you want to be the best known blacksmith, then go for it. People won't be able to pay for that. That is one of those things a person will need to earn through training and toning their blacksmith skills. Only thing people will be able to pay for through backing is really just royalty or a large mass of land, and not everyone really wants that. Also everyone dies eventually and nothing is going to be permanent. Don't think of this as your typical mmo where everyone is striving to be one specific thing. This game is going to give you a lot more freedom than that which is kind of a stressful thing to think about at first lol. Its all up to you. Make what you can with it.

While it is still on Kickstarter it is not pay-to-win but rather the privilege-to-win. When the KS is fully pledged, only then shall I see it as pay to win.

Can you maybe define what you think winning is in a sandbox and we can see if anythning meets your criteria?

Like Jiebao said there is no real "winning" in the game. Plus in my opinion isn't it way more fun to earn things by playing instead of buying the in game items with real money. And the people who get the in game stuff from their kickstarter might lose those items overtime, mounts dying, someone taking their count title etc. So eventually they will be on equal footing with the rest of the players. You won't have to worry about people going around buying in game goodies like swords and armor because there is no in game cashshop or something. Even if they got those goodies the combat is still half skill based so if they suck at combat you can still beat them in it. :P

In some respects, people joining after the three month 'headstart' are going to have a few advantages.

  • They'll be joining established families.
  • Most of the infrastructure wrt trades routes, etc. is likely to be in place.
  • Politically, a lot of the nit picking will already have been done.
  • The 'headstarters' will already be at least a third of the way through their lives.

I've pledged enough to get me into the the headstart not because I'm particularly interested in being there early but because I want to do as much as I can to help the team realise their (and our) dream MMO.
The only 'advantage' I can see for headstarters is knowledge of the games mechanics but you get that whever you join any game after launch anyway.

It's an interesting question. In what ways can money gain any edge in the game? I can only think of deliberate burnout of characters leading to premature permadeath, inheritors then gain stuff from their predecessor. Oh, and illegal methods too e.g. gold buying (or whatever the equivalent of that might be for CoE) and multi accounts.

This is the least pay to win game I've ever seen.

EVERYTHING CAN BE LOST AND DESTROYED

Therefore, yeah, you can be a Baron due to pay, but lose it due to lack of skill.

A very skilled swordsman peasant farmer can come along and theoretically kick your butt and take your Baron title, does that sound like pay to win?

NOPE!

Actually you can't lose titles if some peasant comes and kicks your butt. It's a lot more difficult and requires a casus belli, since you have divine right.

Agreed, not a pay to win game at all. and since I am not a very skillful swords(wo)man, I most assuredly will be playing a support role. but I am going to do it to the best of my ability and have fun while I am at it.
